At first glance, some of the vineyards above the medieval town of Gattinara bear a striking resemblance to the hillsides of Barolo

which lays 90 miles to the south. Tall-growing Nebbiolo vines hug a collection of steep, rounded slopes with exposures in all directions.

But less-apparent differences, in climate and soil, give the wines of Gattinara their own distinctive character. The Alps loom closer, most notably

the glacial peak of Monte Rosa, cooling the nights and bringing frequent rain.

The earth itself is nothing like Barolo’s clay and sand: the ground is a tough, stony mixture of red volcanic porphyry and granite.

  • Day 1: Morning

    Private Guided Winery Tour

In the heart of Gattinara, in northern Piedmont, the Travaglini winery was founded in the 1920s by Clemente Travaglini.

Over the many years as a continuously family-owned winery, Travaglini has established itself as the most esteemed producer of traditional, limited-production Gattinara DOCG wine made from Nebbiolo. It is the only Nebbiolo appellation in Piedmont’s northern region.

The family’s passion and commitment to winemaking has not diminished over the generations. Today, Cinzia Travaglini, the founder’s great-granddaughter, manages day-to-day operations at the winery. Her husband Massimo Collauto is the chief winemaker, a role he inherited from his late father-in-law and beloved mentor, Giancarlo.

You will visit the ancient cellar where Gattinara Riserva is aged and walk amongst the large wooden casks that house various wines. The tour will end with a private room tasting of some of the most representative wines of the winery paired with local cheeses and salami.

    Wine Tasting

    Cinzia Rosso
    Coste della Sesia DOC Nebbiolo
    Gattinara DOCG Classico
    Gattinara DOCG Tre Vigne

  • Day 1: Lunch

Enjoy a traditional meal at Villa Cavalleri

The Salvadego family’s aim has always been to enhance the richness of hospitality traditions, passing on the distinctive traits of this philosophy to their guests.

Locanda Villa Cavalleri is an old 19th century mansion located in the centre of Gattinara, a renowned wine town at the foot of Valsesia and not far from Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta.

Enjoy a traditional 3-course meal (appetizer, first or second dish and dessert) at Locanda Villa Cavalleri!

Wines are not included, to be paid directly to the restaurant.

  • Day 1: Afternoon

    Private Guided Winery Tour

The Cantalupo winery is located in Ghemme, in Upper Piedmont, an area that has been devoted to fine wines for over two millennia.

On one side the chain of the Alps with the imposing massif of Monte Rosa and Valsesia.

On the other, the expanse of the Po Valley with its flat horizon and rice fields. In the middle is the moraine, a fascinating triangle of hills that contain so much history and geological heritage.

And it is from these hills, the kingdom of the roots of Nebbiolo, that the Antichi Vigneti di Cantalupo was born. A reality linked to the love for this land and its historic wine with the full awareness of their great potential.

The estate now has 35 hectares of vineyards. Over the last 45 years, the original nucleus has been enriched with new vineyards distributed among the most suitable areas of themunicipalities of Ghemme and Romagnano Sesia.

The classic tour is an experience that tells the story of the Arlunno family and the wines they produce.

You will visit the winery, built into the hillside, and the “infernotto”, a dark, deeply quiet place with a narrow deep quietness with a narrow corridor corridor overlooked by the cells that house the cells that house the bottled rest of the Ghemme.
