Montalcino Territory

Montalcino, forty kilometers south of the city of Siena, is a stunning hilltop town in the heart of Tuscany. With rolling hills and farmland of rare beauty, it has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 2004.

The climate is prevalently mild during the entire growing phase of the grapevines, with many clear days that allow for a gradual and full ripening of the fruit. The soils of Montalcino vary, due to its formation over different geological ages. The lowest areas are made up of relatively loose soils. As one moves up the hill, the soil becomes dense with stony particles formed by the decomposition of the original marl and limestone.

The exceptional quality of Brunello di Montalcino starts in the vineyard and all the processes share the goal of producing and harvesting the best fruit. Some winemakers perform another selection at harvest, so that only the most perfect grapes are brought to the wine cellar. For several years, Brunello remained a prestigious wine, the province of just a few refined connoisseurs. Only in the second half of the 20th century did it transition from an exquisite delicacy known by the elite to an international symbol of the finest Italian wine.

  • Day 1: Morning

Private Guided Winery Tour at Mastrojanni

In the morning you will be welcomed at Mastrojanni Winery. During the guided tour you will visit the wine cellar, the vineyards and learn about the history of winemaking in this area. Mastrojanni has been writing history with its wines since 1975, collecting awards from all over the world. In those years, only a few entered the wine-making adventure in Montalcino.

In 1975 Gabriele Mastrojanni bought the San Pio and Loreto estates and decided to plant his first vineyards, of which part are still producing their wines today. Andrea Machetti took the reins of Mastrojanni in 1992 transforming it into one of the most highly respected producers in Montalcino. Andrea is a man of few words and by now knows each of the estate’s vines perfectly. He knows how to grow them and make them feel good bringing ripe fruit year after year because he is there, always there, following every single detail, from a barrel which needs to be replaced or planed to a plant in need of help. He knows that this is the only way to make a fine wine: to be at its beck and call.

    Wine Tasting

The tour ends with a tasting of 5 most iconic wines of Mastrojanni Winery: Rosso di Montalcino, Ciliegiolo and three different vintages of Brunello paired with typical Tuscan cheeses and our Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

Bread is baked directely at the Restaurant and lot of pastas hand-made.

Not to mention the delicious desserts the real passion of the owner Alessandra!

The restaurant is just outside Montalcino located on a lovely hill overlooking the Crete Senesi, from their terrace you can admire one of the most beautiful views of Tuscany!

  • Day 1: Afternoon

Private Guided Winery Tour at Le Ripi

Owned by Francesco Illy - Illy coffee group - Podere Le Ripi is one of the most elegant biodynamic vineyards in the area of Montalcino. A boutique winery with forest, vineyards and centenary olive trees. An uncontaminated soil and a marvelous vegetal variety surrounded by a breathtaking view.

At Podere Le Ripi they started with biodynamic farming in 2010. A soil which is treated biodynamically is very similar to the soil of a woodland and very different from the soil of a conventional farm winery. The biodynamic approach, in absence of chemical interventions, allows the plants to grow in the most natural way possible and they can express the authenticity of the soil, the microclimate, and the grape varieties of Podere Le Ripi.

Francesco built a stunning cellar in a spiral shape following ancient techniques. It’s held together only by bricks and mortar, there is no reinforced concrete at all. The cellar building is often used for lunches, tastings and events.

You will be explained the productive processes of the biodynamic farming philosophy from the processes of tillage and vinification to that of refinement of the wine. The tour will end with a tasting in the peace and quietness of their panoramic tasting room.
