Known for its deep-rooted history in Canelli, where the winery has operated since 1892, Coppo has long been a name synonymous with quality and tradition in Piedmont. While historically linked to Barbera and sparkling wines, in the past few years Coppo has expanded its reach to some of the most prestigious vineyards in the Langhe, adding Nebbiolo to its portfolio and confirming the ever-growing commitment to seeking quality, respecting tradition and expressing the best of Piedmont through authentic, terroir-driven wines.
he latest
acquisitions in the Langhe have now culminated in the release of the first
vintages of Barolo DOCG del Comune di La Morra and Langhe Nebbiolo
– two wines that embody both the
heritage and forward-thinking vision of the winery.
Barolo
DOCG del Comune di La Morra 2020 is
the result of decades of experience and a unique historical privilege. Since
the 1950s, in fact, Coppo has been producing Barolo in Canelli: thanks to this longstanding tradition, it
remains one of the few wineries permitted to vinify Barolo outside of the appellation’s strict production zone.
This exception, granted by what is often called a “grandfather clause”,
allows Coppo to continue crafting Barolo at its Canelli facility, an
authorization that honors their historical role in Piedmontese winemaking.
Sourced from
the blue-gray marl soils of La Morra, this Barolo reflects the elegance and
finesse of its terroir. The Nebbiolo grapes, harvested from vineyards at
an altitude of 220-240 meters, are vinified with meticulous care, with 36
months of aging in large barrels
lending structure and refinement. Aromatically, the wine reveals classic notes
of rose and violet, underpinned by red berries and a subtle trace of licorice.
The tannins are soft yet persistent, with a linear, clean finish that speaks to
the wine’s precision and capacity for
aging.
Langhe
Nebbiolo 2020 offers a different expression of
Nebbiolo, one that emphasizes freshness
and purity. Sourced from south/south-east facing vineyards, this Nebbiolo is vinified in stainless steel to preserve its
vibrant fruit character and delicate tannic structure. On the nose, the wine
opens with bright red fruit – particularly
strawberries and raspberries – accompanied by hints of withered violet. On the palate, it is lively and mineral-driven, with well-integrated tannins that make
it approachable now, yet capable of evolving further with time.
