Enotrivia – Lazio, nunc est bibendum

03 November 2025

Lazio is a region that holds the foundations of our civilisation. It’s the land where Rome was born, expanded, and shaped an empire that, for centuries, influenced the way we live, build, eat – and drink wine. Here, wine has never been just an agricultural product: it was a social symbol, a daily ritual, a cultural element woven into both public and private life.

The countryside around the capital was already densely planted in the Republican era; amphorae from these vineyards supplied the entire Mediterranean, while advanced techniques of winemaking, preservation, and ageing made Lazio one of the most sophisticated wine centres of the ancient world.

To walk through these landscapes today is to tread on millennia of history – a legacy that continues, in new forms, to shape contemporary viticulture.

An ancient tradition with a contemporary spirit

If it’s true that wine from Lazio once flowed freely at the banquets of Ancient Rome, it’s equally true that its modern appeal comes from its ability to evolve. Today, Lazio is a region unafraid of exploration: alongside native varieties like Cesanese, Bellone, Malvasia Puntinata, and Trebbiano Giallo, international grapes have found an ideal habitat here – revealing entirely new expressions.
The secret lies in its geography. The sea tempers the summer heat, the Tyrrhenian breezes bring freshness, and the Apennine mountains provide shelter and regulate day–night temperature shifts. In between lies an ancient, fertile plain with deep agricultural roots: the Agro Pontino, one of the most surprising territories for soil richness and biodiversity.

Agro Pontino: a living lab between sea and mountains

Once a marshland, today the Agro Pontino is home to vineyards that breathe the sea air. Sand, clay, limestone fragments, and breezy exposures create the perfect conditions for an innovative approach to viticulture – a rare balance of Mediterranean influence and aromatic-mineral finesse.

It’s this unique blend of sea, light, and wind that allows Lazio to produce wines that combine intensity with freshness, structure with tension. A territory that captivates with its energy and with a stylistic range that continues to surprise.

Casale del Giglio: the innovative soul of the Agro Pontino

This is where Casale del Giglio comes to life. Founded in 1967, the winery has become one of the most dynamic and forward-thinking names in the region. Located in Le Ferriere, at the heart of the Pontine plain, Casale del Giglio chose the path of research: starting in the 1980s, they planted nearly 60 different grape varieties, studying soils, microclimates, and potential before selecting the most suitable ones for the land.

It was a bold approach – one that led to wines now recognised both nationally and internationally, from Syrah and Petit Verdot reds to Sauvignon, Viognier, and Petit Manseng whites, and the iconic Mater Matuta, a symbol of the winery’s philosophy.

The wine tourism experience is just as rich: from winery tours to immersive walks through the Natural Oasis and private lunches at the estate, where wine and Roman cuisine meet in unexpected harmony.
Casale del Giglio is living proof that Lazio is a region in full transformation – a place where history emerges at every step, but where the future of wine is being shaped with vision, research, and care.
