A new era for Moscato: Canelli DOCG and Coppo

15 July 2024

Canelli – nestled in the heart of Piedmont – has long been synonymous with Moscato d'Asti, an internationally beloved wine renowned for its captivating sweetness and aromatic complexity. At the forefront of this legacy is Coppo, a pioneering winery that has shaped the region’s identity. Starting in 2023, Moscato DOCG Canelli is officially recognized as an appellation; Coppo proudly represents this milestone with its Montecalvina.

Moscato has roots dating back centuries, with its origins linked to the hills of Piedmont. Known for its low alcohol content and natural effervescence, is has garnered a devoted following worldwide; Canelli, with its diverse microclimates and ideal growing conditions, has been instrumental in cultivating the highest quality Moscato, and its rich viticultural history is a testament to the dedication of local winemakers.

The designation of Moscato Canelli as a DOCG marks a pivotal moment – one that rightly highlights the intrinsic value of terroir as the specific combination of natural characteristics and human experience.

To qualify for this appellation, wines must originate from the 17 municipalities recognized within the Canelli area. Grapes must be of the Moscato Bianco variety, with strict regulations governing yield limits, sugar content, and vinification methods.

Coppo has emerged as a crucial advocate for this recognition, aligning with local producers to elevate Canelli’s profile within the competitive landscape of Italian wine. The journey to achieve DOCG status involved meticulous evaluations of vineyard practices and winemaking standards – and a sharing of values that goes deeper than just commerce; for over 130 years, Coppo has been crafting Moscato in Canelli, embodying a legacy steeped in tradition, quality, and an unwavering commitment to excellence and terroir.

Montecalvina Moscato DOCG Canelli

Starting with the 2023 harvest, Coppo’s Moncalvina Moscato features the new Canelli DOCG on its label. This wine – originating in south/south-east facing vineyards at over 200m of altitude – is a full embodiment of Canelli’s essence.

After being manually harvested, the Moscato grapes undergo soft pressing followed by a slow fermentation in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures until the alcohol content reaches 5%. This careful vinification process captures the natural carbon dioxide produced during fermentation, imparting a delightful light fizziness to the wine. With a stunning straw-colored hue, slightly tinged with greenish reflections, it presents floral notes intertwined with peach and pear overtones on the nose. The palate is fresh and aromatic, making it an exquisite pairing for cakes, cookies, and fruit-based desserts.
