The volcano and nature are two forces enclosed within the authentic and expressive wines of this territory.

Etna

The perfectly shaped vineyards seem to be miles away once at the foot of Mount Etna: here, plants fight against cacti and olive trees for land. The force of nature provides everything, thanks to the fertile volcanic soil; but with this same force, it can take it all back as well. This wild harmony combines with the deep blue sea and the bright red lava. From the vineyards and terraces at the foot of the highest volcano in Europe come the great wines of Etna.

Both whites and reds proudly bear their authentic nature, perfectly embodying this harsh yet magnificent territory. Acidic white wines with complex Mediterranean aromas and reds characterized by the encounter between acidity and tannins. Thanks to the steadfast work of its producers, this region has become an important point of reference on the international wine scene.

The local white varieties grown are Carricante and Mannella; as for the reds, we can mention Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio, which make up the amazing Etna DOC.

  • Day 1: Morning

Private guided winery tour at Donnafugata

The name “Donnafugata” is from the famous novel by Tomasi di Lampedusa and refers to “a woman on the run” who found shelter among the vineyards. This image inspired the company logo wanted by the Rallo family, who has been producing wine since 1851 in their Etna, Contessa Entellina, Vittoria, Pantelleria and Marsala estates.

Aside from tradition and high quality, the winery is famous for the signature labels created by the famous international artist Stefano Vitale and strongly desired by Gabriella Rallo. Each label is a unique work of art, a small and colorful treasure.

Donnafugata produces timeless wines, ranging from whites to rosés to reds. Generations of enthusiasts have been captivated by Passito di Pantelleria “Ben Ryé”, “Chiarandà” or “Mille e una notte”, as well as “Anthìlia”, “Lumera” and “Sedàra”.

  • Day 1: Afternoon

Private Guided Winery Tour at Planeta Sciaranuova

Sicily and its terroir, discovering Planeta

Five centuries and seventeen generations along the roads of agricultural evolution: from the small family winery in Menfi, to the wine renaissance of Sicily and the five estates of Menfi, Vittoria, Noto, Capo Milazzo and Etna.

This is a place where sustainability is a travelled road. Social projects like Parco della Salute in Palermo and great attention to art – venturing in accommodating cultural activities at the wineries, providing traveling residences like Viaggio in Sicilia for artists, the Sciaranuova Festival at the Teatro in Vigna on Etna or Santa Cecilia in Musica among the vineyards of Noto – are proof of this commitment.

Sciaranuova is located on the northern side of Etna, among lava flows and woods, not far from Passopisciaro. After planting Nerello and Carricante vineyards, the winery was built in 2012 on the southern part of the estate. The northern area has seen operations aimed at the conservative restoration of the old residences that are now the heart of hospitality.

The Etna produces six wines from Carricante, Riesling, Nerello Mascalese and Pinot Noir grapes.

Tour of the cellar and tasting of 4 Planeta white wines, followed by the tasting of 3 extra virgin olive oils produced by the company, served with typical local products.
