Irpinia Territory

Irpinia is an ancient land. Nestled in the Apennine mountains to the east of Naples, this small area used to be the territory of the Hirpini, an ancient Samnite tribe. Named for the wolf that supposedly led the tribe to the area, Irpinia’s history has long been tied to the cultivation of grapes, hazelnuts, chestnuts and black truffles.

Although Irpinia is no longer recognized as the legal name, the province of Avellino continues to use the imagery of the wolf in honour of the prosperity he led the area to.

The contemporary wines that are renowned from Irpinia - Fiano di Avellino, Greco di Tufo and Taurasi - are as ancient as the land. Evidence suggests that the Romans were producing similar wines 2,000 years ago! Expect richly aromatic wines, with full bodies and powerful structures.

  • Day 1: Morning

Private Guided Winery Tour at Feudi di San Gregorio

The culture of hospitality is a deeply-rooted tradition in Campania, and Feudi di San Gregorio is devoted to making visitors feel welcome.

Feudi di San Gregorio, located in Campania, is the leading winery of southern Italy. Founded in 1986, today Feudi is owned by the Capaldo family and produces 3.5 million bottles annually from a total of 600 hectares of vineyards.

The winery is in the ancient area of Irpinia, where they aim to restore and revamp local wine production through a high-quality, modern approach. When many producers in Italy uprooted old vines in favour of international grape varieties, Feudi held fast to the local heritage and continued to cultivate native varieties like white Greco di Tufo, Fiano di Avellino, Falanghina, and red Aglianico.

Today, their wine production includes a wide range of whites and reds, with the pride of their production Irpinia Aglianico DOC Serpico, powerful red made from their historical vineyard Dal Re, “of the King”.

    Winery Tour

The winery tour is a full-on sensorial experience of the scented aromatic herb garden, rose bushes, and fragrant orchard matched with the unique atmosphere of the barrel cellar which mirrors the grapes “life cycle” on the estate.

  • Day 1: Lunch

Enjoy a fine-dining lunch at family’s property Marennà restaurant

Marennà is the heart of Feudi’s hospitality, where local dishes are served with a creative twist.

The name comes from Latin merere, “to deserve,” denoting the well-earned rest at the end of a long day of working in the fields. Chef Roberto Allocca’s search for high quality ingredients take place on different fronts, starting from the organic vegetable garden.

To this we should add the selection of many other basic ingredients, such as the Carmasciando cheeses produced in Irpinia, not to mention the collaboration with many local farmers who are sharing Marennà’s research.
