The Grand Wine Tour has arrived in Marche! We are thrilled to announce the addition of Tenuta Cocci Grifoni to our growing Association. Nestled in the Piceno hills, the Tenuta Cocci Grifoni is a pioneer of Pecorino DOCG and are deeply committed to the environmental sustainability of their production.

Where is Tenuta Cocci Grifoni?

The winery is located in the Marche region, on Italy’s Adriatic Coast, in the province of Ascoli Piceno. This part of Marche borders with Abruzzo to the south and stretches from the sea to the borders of Umbria and Lazio. Meaning, it is squarely in Central Italy and easy to get to by train and car. Marche is a region that continues to fly under-the-radar but is worthy of much praise. Built along the ancient Roman Via Salaria (Salt Road) which connected the Roman Empire to salt production on the Adriatic, the Piceno area has long been a centre of trade and craftwork. This continues to be displayed in the stunning Renaissance cities, artisanal products and rich art. Tenuta Cocci Grifoni is The Grand Wine Tour’s first winery in Marche, and we are thrilled to include their winemaking heritage into our Mark of Excellence. What kind of wine do they make?

Tenuta Cocci Grifoni is a pioneer of Marche’s native grapes: Pecorino, Passerina, and Montepulciano. Guido Cocci Grifoni, the founder of the modern winery, rediscovered Pecorino and dedicated his entire career to elevating it as a great wine of the Marche. Tenuta Cocci Grifoni’s white range includes Pecorino Offida DOCG and Passerina made both as a still and sparkling wine. Their red range is simply Rosso Piceno and Rosso Piceno Superiore. All of the winery’s vineyards are historic, with an average age of 30 years, and are managed organically in order to sustain them properly into the future. In fact, Tenuta Cocci Grifoni is deeply committed to preserving the environment and biodiversity around them. The land their vineyards live on has been in the family’s care for four-generations and they intend for it to remain thriving for future generations. This is why of the total 95 hectares of land, 50% are vineyards, 12% are planted with cereals, 7% are local olive groves, and 31% are left as forested land. Wildflowers and beneficial insects are welcomed between the vineyard rows and the winery undertakes the care of local trails for people to enjoy the stunning outdoors. Why should you visit them?

First and foremost, because they make amazing wine! They are leaders of Marche’s native grapes and you’d be hard-pressed to find as representative labels anywhere else in the region. However, the winery does more than just make wine. They are headquartered in the family’s historic country residence which has been transformed into a charming bed & breakfast with an incredible dining terrace that overlooks the surrounding vineyards. The wine experiences at Tenuta Cocci Grifoni are expansive and most definitely unique. Thanks to the care they take in preserving their lands, it is possible to go on a bird watching tour or hike the trails around the vineyards and return for a tasting. For those more interested in the culture of the area, the winery offers cooking classes or painting with wine activities.
