Maremma: experience the Cultural Heritage in Southern Tuscany
Maremma is located in the southern part of Tuscany and was once the heartland of the Etruscans. It stretches along the Southern Tuscan coast and inland to
the towns which the area’s first inhabitants carved out of the tuff stone. This land has such a fascinating history: the numerous Etruscan, and later Roman,
settlements have been abandoned in the Middle Ages, and the swampy land became malaria-ridden and impossible to cultivate.
The draining of this territory
began in the 18th century but was only completed about 60 years ago. This makes the area remain rather wild and undiscovered. The landscape is primarily
agricultural and the only large city for miles around is Grosseto. For many years, there haven’t been any vineyards in this area, and even today only a few
wine cellars are open, making it the perfect place for serious wine lovers.
