The Castello di Cigognola winery stands among the Oltrepò Pavese hills in Lombardy, embraced by the regions of Piedmont and Emilia in a territory once known as “Old Piedmont”.
Its proprietors Gian Marco and Letizia Moratti, oenologist Riccardo Cotarella, and a team of experts intuited the potential of the soil and terroir in the 1980s when Gian Marco bought the property.
They invested in wines and cellars, transforming the ancient castle into a point of reference for top quality Lombardy wines. It wasn’t long before prestigious Italian wine guides began recognizing their labels, in particular La Maga Oltrepò Pavese DOC Barbera, a soft and fruity Barbera; their sparkling ‘More Oltrepò Pavese DOCG Pinot Nero; and ‘More Rosé Oltrepò Pavese DOCG Pinot Nero Rosé. Gian Marco and Letizia believe that intimate knowledge with the terroir is the most important starting point for high quality wine.
The microclimate of the winery’s territory is exceptional, with moderate temperatures, low amounts of precipitation, and mild winters, allowing the grapes to reach optimal ripeness before harvest. The vines cultivated by the Castello di Cigognola winery are part of the Oltrepò Pavese DOC territory: barbera, pinot nero, nebbiolo, and chardonnay. Castello di Cigognola’s vineyard management and work in the cellars adhere to agricultural programs with low environmental impact.
