Wine & Food tour in the fertile plains of Emilia Romagna, where food and wine reign supreme

Emilia-Romagna Territory

Emilia-Romagna is the most famous region of Italy where everyone forgets its name. Probably because you are familiar with Parmigiano Reggiano from Parma, Balsamic vinegar from Modena and the ubiquitous sugo Bolognese, from none other than, Bologna. Not to mention tortellini, lasagna, prosciutto di Parma, fresh-egg pasta and basically every other gastronomic delicacy you want on an Italian menu. Put simply, Emilia-Romagna is the food capital of Italy. Of course, in a country where food and wine are inseparable, Emilia-Romagna boasts of equally great wine. In the rolling hills of the Apennines, vineyards of the historic Sangiovese grape sweep the slopes and become bottles of powerful red wine that match in body to the luscious foods of the region.

Program

    Private Guided Winery Tour

Located in Castel San Pietro Terme, among the hills that dominate the landscape of the ancient Via Emilia on the border between Emilia and Romagna, this winery was founded in the early 60s. As one of the first wine makers in Emilia-Romagna to believe in the potential of the Sangiovese grape, Umberto Cesari has been faithful in his commitment and today is known as a Master of Sangiovese. Nowadays, the winery extends over 335 hectares, 175 hectares of which are proprietary and includes 8 estates. This tour features a brief walk in the vineyards, a guided tour of the winery, and the ageing cellar where you will enjoy an illustrated explanation of how Umberto Cesari wine is made. The tour will end with a deluxe tasting of four iconic wines paired with gourmet local artisanal food.

    Wine & Food Tasting

    - Liano Chardonnay Sauvignon Blanc Rubicone IGT paired with Prosciutto di Parma DOP (aged 18 months), Squacquerone di Romagna DOP cheese, caramalized figs, and classic white bread

Each participant will receive a half bottle of a unique late harvest wine: Colle del Re Passito - 100% Albana di Romagna

  • Day 1: Afternoon

Private Guided Winery Tour at Poderi delle Rocche

Winery It was 1995 when three friends, Ettore, Paolo and Roberto, decided to join forces and embark upon an important project: a new Wine-making enterprise able to innovate and develop the territory. It was with this commitment that Cantina Poderi delle Rocche was established. Farsighted in their approach to wine-making, the three partners highlighted the qualities of the raw materials, the complexity of the Albana and native grape varieties of their land, by creating wines with precious characteristics. Research into leading-edge vinification techniques and continuous quality improvements have not deprived the product of the traditional manual skills required. All the processes are performed by the partners, with help from their employees and family members. Thus each bottle of wine is transformed into a quality product and is personally checked. Poderi delle Rocche wine is the tangible result of the passion with which the land between Dozza, Linaro and Montecatone is cultivated. The chemical-physical composition of the soil and its exposure to sunlight help the vines to grow in a healthy, thriving way and give rise to little works of art. Cantina Poderi delle Rocche continues to develop and to grace their tables with the engaging smile of the lands of Romagna.

    Wine & Food Tasting

Tasting of 3 iconic wines of the Winery paired with warm piadina, assorted cured meats and organic artisan cheeses.

Private Guided Winery Tour at Fattoria Monticino Rosso

Fattoria Monticino Rosso is a family-run winery founded in 1965 by Antonio Zeoli who bought an initial thirteen hectares vineyard parcel. In the following years his sons Luciano and Gianni, who are now leading the business, came up beside Antonio, and in 1985 the family acquired another twenty-four-hectares parcel called “Monticino Rosso”, from which the whole farmstead name is derived. Monticino winery rises among the hills of Imola, next to the border of the town of Dozza, where the production of the sparkling wines from Emilia gives way to the firm and wild wines from Romagna. “Monticino Rosso” was already clearly identified in the cadastral acts edited during the Napoleonic era under the name of “Monticino dei meli granati” (“the pomegranates’ hill”) and for a century at least was owned by the noble Imolese family Codronchi Torelli, whose wealth and culture allowed for the landscape to be shaped harmonically. And it is with gratitude to those who owned and loved these lands, preserving the tradition of cultivating native grapes, that Luciano and Gianni Zeoli wanted to give the name of “Codronchio” to one of their most significant wines, a selection of dry Albana di Romagna.

    Wine Tasting

    - Tamburello Colli di Imola DOC Pignoletto
    - Codronchio Romagna DOCG Albana
    - Frutti Rossi Sangiovese Riserva

Enjoy free time to walk through the Medieval village of Dozza

The Medieval village of Dozza, one of the 100 “Borghi più belli d’Italia” is located south of Bologna, on the crest of a gentle hill dominating the Sellustra river valley. In Dozza, art becomes part of the urban landscape, through the decoration of house walls, streets and squares, illuminating the corners of the village with light and bright colours. It’s a real open-air museum, where you can admire more than one hundred works by several contemporary prestigious artists. Its historical centre, perched a top the hill, maintains its original Medieval structures including the imposing Rocca Sforzesca (Dozza Castle). The Rocca houses a museum that recounts the history of the village and the Centro Studi e Documentazione del Muro Dipinto (Painted Wall Study Centre), that includes sketches, archives, and bibliographic documents about the city’s painted walls. Dozza hosts the Biennale of contemporary art of the Muro Dipinto that takes place every two years on the third week of September.
